A step-wise approach to integrating phylogeographic and phylogenetic biogeographic perspectives on the history of a core North American warm deserts biota

چکیده
In this paper, we develop a five-step approach for analysis of historical relationships among areas of endemism using a set of 22 clades (9 mammal, 7 bird, 4 reptile, 1 amphibian, and 1 cactus) drawn from the warm deserts biota of western North America. As has been suggested in previous studies of portions of this biota, our results suggest a complex biogeographic history, but with substantial support for the influence of several major vicariant events in the diversification and assembly of the aridlands biota. We discuss and demonstrate the reciprocal strengths (and weaknesses) of phylogeography and phylogenetic biogeography for defining areas of endemism, analysing vicariance and dispersal, and dealing with temporal and spatial pseudo-congruence. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Phylogeography and systematics of the Peromyscus eremicus species group and the historical biogeography of North American warm regional deserts.
Phylogeographic relationships among 26 populations from throughout the geographic range of the Peromyscus eremicus species group are described based on sequence data for a 699-bp fragment of the mitochondrial DNA COIII gene. Distance, maximum-likelihood, and maximum-parsimony analyses of phylogenetic trees generated under four separate character-weighting strategies and representing five altern...
متن کاملA multilocus perspective on the speciation history of a North American aridland toad (Anaxyrus punctatus).
Interpretations of phylogeographic patterns can change when analyses shift from single gene-tree to multilocus coalescent analyses. Using multilocus coalescent approaches, a species tree and divergence times can be estimated from a set of gene trees while accounting for gene-tree stochasticity. We utilized the conceptual strengths of a multilocus coalescent approach coupled with complete range-...
متن کاملHistorical Biogeography in North American Arid Regions: an Approach Using Mitochondrial-dna Phylogeny in Grasshopper Mice (genus Onychomys).
Restriction-endonuclease-site variation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was used to investigate patterns of geographic and phylogenetic divergence within the rodent genus Onychomys. Onychomys has occupied arid habitats in the western North American deserts, shrub-steppes, and grasslands since the late Tertiary. A phylogenetic analysis of the total mtDNA restriction-site variation throughout the ra...
متن کاملPhylogeography in coastal marine animals: a solution from California?
Aim Recently discovered deep phylogenetic gaps in coastal California marine taxa are geographically discordant with the provincial biogeographic boundary at Point Conception. This discordance runs contrary to the phylogeographic hypotheses that were derived from studies of coastal marine taxa in south-eastern North America. Here, I investigate the nature of the discrepant phylogeographic and bi...
متن کاملEvaluation of effectiveness of some mitochondrial genes in biosystematics and phylogeographic studies of house mouse (Mus musculus ) subspecies
The identification of the efficiency of some mtDNA genes of Mus musculus species complex (house mouse) for biosystematics research was studied in this approach. Recent studies have made use of different mitochondrial genes including NADH dehydrogenase genes, cytochrome b gene, cytochrome oxidase genes, D-loop region and whole mtDNA genome to study the house mouse species. Usage of each of these...
